Make Music Pasadena!
Saturday the 21st, I went to the Make Music Pasadena festival. It went from about noon to 10pm. There were two band there that I really wanted to see. Nortec Collective and Kinky. Here’s a description of the festival from the website.
“On that day, sidewalks, parks, courtyards, alleys, building lobbies and other unconventional performance spaces will become spontaneous musical stages and social gathering places. Amateur musicians will bring their musical talents to the streets of Pasadena and perform to new crowds.
Top selling and internationally known artists will perform at SIX themed main stages. What better way to jump start the summer than by dancing in the streets, throughout the day, to these wonderful music performances.
All performances are free and open to the public”
So, I was pretty excited to go! I got there around 2:30pm to watch Nortec Collective play at 3pm. I got there in time and they were just okay. I was wondering how they would be live since they’re mostly just electronic music. We watched for about 20 mins then walked about a mile to the stage where Kinky was scheduled to play at 6pm.
It was so unreasonably hot that day. We walked about halfway and started feeling dehydrated. Mom started getting a headache. So, we stopped for some lunch, water, and AC at Rock Island Chicken Wraps. We felt a little better then moved on to the stage area.
We got to the stage where two other bands were playing before Kinky and they weren’t that great. I downloaded some of their music before the concert to check them out. Some of it sounded good. But in the heat it was just not good enough. So, Mom and I decided to go home early and not see Kinky.
We went to Pinkberry to cool off and get some energy. The power of Pinkberry! It rejuvenated us and we went back to the stage to see Kinky play. They were just finishing setting up when we got there and started shortly after. We found a place right next to the stage in the shade and the sun was starting to set. So, it was perfect. Kinky rocked Pasadena!!!
I was a fan of their music which sounds mostly electronic if you buy the albums, but they all played their instruments live. They were all characters, had great stage presence, and were all very good with at their respective instruments. It was one of the best concerts I’ve seen in some time. It could be cause I haven’t seen a concert like this in a while, but they were just awesomely good. So, if you haven’t heard of them already, check out Kinky, and definitely see them live if you get the chance.
Here are some home movie clips I took of them playing at the festival. The wee camcorder I had couldn’t pick up the bass very well, so the bass is a little fuzzy. Click on the song titles.
- Soun Tha Mi Primer Amour of the album Kinky
- Una Linea De Luz of the album Reina
- Mas of the album Kinky
So all and all it was a positive experience thanks to Kinky. It would have been much better if it wasn’t so abnoxiously hot that day. Hopefully next year it won’t be as hot.

Slowly settling in.
Errands
I’ve been in Alhambra for a week and a half now. It’s been awesome and I’m really liking it here. Almost every day has been spent doing some type of errand to try and get settled in.
DMV
Today I went to the DMV to renew my license. I never wound up getting a Hawaii driver’s license and still have my Massachusetts one. It expires in September so I figured I’d get that handled now. I didn’t know I had to take a written test to renew my license and didn’t think it would take that long. Poor Amy had to wait while I was doing all that because I gave her a ride to work, but it turned out she didn’t have to work because they changed the schedule.
I waited in 6 lines.
- to tell them why I was there and get the proper form to fill out and get a number…my number was G091
- to pay a $28 processing fee and take an eye exam
- to take my picture
- to wait to take the test
- to correct the test and see if I passed.
- to get my new license after passing.
I also got the minimum score to pass on the exam. I got 6 wrong, 7 would have failed me. I’m not sure how many of the lines above I’d have to wait in again if I failed. It was a tense moment waiting for the score.
Groceries
We bought some. Then we ate them, twice. Once for lunch and once for dinner.
Nap
I took one. I didn’t get a very good night sleep last night. I woke up in the middle of the night to some Chinese couple arguing outside. Then I had a hard time getting back to sleep in the heat. It’s been HOT here!
My Corner of The Studio
Re-arranged the desks that were in my corner of the studio. It feels a little more conducive for me to work in now. I also made room for my drums when they come in.
My Achy Breaky Leg
I signed mom and I up for a membership at LA Fitness. It’s been about a few months since I’ve done regular exercise and I’m feeling the effects. The newest thing is a dull pain in my left leg, especially when I’m sitting too long. I need to move around. I think my Taekwondo days have come to an end. It’s just too hard on the body. I went to check out some TKD places here and found a decent one, but couldn’t convince myself to sign up. I was also considering Capoeira with Gordon but I don’t want to get sucked into another hobby. I really want to focus on my drumming instead. This gym has got to be the nicest gym I’ve been a part of so far. 3 levels, I think the guy said 35,000 sq feet, pool, basketball and racquetball courts, tons of classes. Good stuff.
Captain Vegetable
So, for a while now I’ve been making an honest attempt to eat more raw crunchy vegetables. A salad is one of my favorite things to eat these days. My sister found an old video clip from Sesame Street to tease me with featuring Captain Vegetable which I forgot all about. It’s still good!
Another Sesame Street segment that I always enjoyed was the Pinball Number Count. I didn’t know that The Pointer Sisters did the vocals for this. I dare you not to get this song stuck in your head.
My favorite character though was always The Count….ah ah ah ah.
